Centro Ashé Farm, a medicinal plant sanctuary, homestead, and education center located about an forty five south of Washington DC in Bryans Road, MD.  This abundant and humble farm is our homestead,  as well as workshop and retreat space.  The land is home to hundreds of species of medicinal and native plants, open pasture and forest, fruit trees and more.  In our gardens we grow incredible medicines, save seeds, grow food, and continually find new and creative endeavors. We are thankful for beautiful land we are blessed to call home and are humbled to be able to share it with those who come visit!

Field Day ~ Medicinal Plant Identification Intensive 
Sept. 8, 2013 from 9am-3pm
Instructor: Holly Poole-Kavana Join us for a day exploring the incredible world of medicinal plants.  This field day will be exactly that, outdoors exploring both cultivated and wild varieties of medicinal species, you'll get up close and personal learning many plants you can grow at home! While out in the gardens we will learn identifying features between various plants so you can hone your own plant ID skills, while learning many of the traditional medicinal uses of the plants.

One Day - Herbal Medicine Making and Herbal Body Care
Sunday November 17, 2013 10am-4pm
Instructor - Molly Meehan
This class will be a hands on day including herbal plant walk around the farm, tincture making as well as a medicine making rotation medicinal oil, tea formulas, herbal salves, and more.  Each student will leave with their own tincture, salve, tea formula, and oil, an incredible beginning to an herbal medicine kit! Click Here for More Info and Registration

The second year of our Grassroots Herbal and Holistic Wellness Program is meant to deepen our practice of herbalism. This is a practical course, extensive time is spent outdoors on various garden and hiking tours coming face to face with many new species.  There is also a major focus on practical medicine making, the entire course is focused on building participants personal apothecaries. Assateague Island National Seashore STEM Workshop for Secondary Educators July 25-26, 2013


The primary objective of the training is to increase teacher's familiarity with the national seashore, it's resources and the specifics of our new high school STEM focused education programs. The two-day workshop will focus on water quality issues, climate science and sea level rise and will cover a broad array of materials, activities and topics.
Target Audience: 25 H.S. science teachers from Worcester, Wicomico, Dorchester and Somerset Counties.
Date: July 25-26, Thursday 9 am- 5 pm, Friday 9 am- 4 pm. Total 15 hrs
Agenda and Activities:
Thursday, July 25
9:00am- Introductions, welcome and review of training objectives. Location- Environmental Education Center (EEC)
9:30am- Overview of regional Bridging the Watershed (BTW) program. Location- (EEC)
10:00am- Conduct Marine Watershed Watchdogs program. Location- Old Ferry Landing
  •   1-hour kayak tour
  •   1- hour vertebrate/invertebrate sampling, water quality and abiotic conditions data collection.
    12:00- Lunch at EEC
    12:30pm- Conduct BTW pre/post activities
    2:00pm- Plankton Lab at University of Maryland Eastern Shore Sarbanes Lab 3:00pm- Resource Chat- Sea Level Rise and Climate Change Science 4:00pm- Visitor Center orientation
    5:00pm- Conclude

    Friday, July 26
    9:00am- Review of beach profiling activity. Location- EEC 9:30am- Beach profiling activity. Location North Beach
    11:00am- Beach to Bay tour activity (study of island ecology- biomes, communities, adaptations, interrelationships, biodiversity)
    12:00- Lunch at EEC
    12:30pm- Beach profiling data processing and graphing

1:30pm- Review of BTW resources and relevant web sites
2:30- Review ties to NGSS, Common Core and state environmental literacy mandates 3:30- Program registration, fee waivers and transportation subsidies
4:00- Conclude

Teachers who complete the training will receive:
$100 stipend paid by our partner, The Alice Ferguson Foundation.
1 credit hour of Maryland State Dept. of Education Professional Development
preferential field trip registration
$100-$500 dollar per school transportation reimbursement to be applied to park field trips.

Deadline for registration is July 1.
We will accept the first 24 teachers who register allotting 6 slots each for Dorchester, Somerset, Wicomico and Worcester counties. In the case counties not using their allotment, the teachers on waiting lists from other counties will be accepted.

Native Plant Sale and Festival


Please join the Izaak Walton League for a native plant sale and festival on Saturday, May 4 from 9am to 12pm in Gaithersburg, MD.  Experts will be on hand to answer your questions and help you attract birds and butterflies to your yard while improving water quality at the same time. Learn about cash rebates that may be available to you through the City of Gaithersburg or Montgomery County RainScapes Rewards programs. Learn all about how to install and use rain barrels to save costs on your water bills. Also on hand, Master Gardeners to answer all of your gardening questions and landscape designers who can help you with native plant gardening.
