2 PAID Internships
40 hours/week, June – August
The Maryland Coastal Bays Program (MCBP) is seeking to fill two Summer Internship positions.
1. Education & Communication Internship
Responsibilities will include assisting with and conducting a variety of environmental education programs & outreach activities designed to engage students, families, community members, and visitors in meaningful outdoor experiences and nature-play in and around Maryland’s coastal bays. Intern will help facilitate a connection with nature, foster understanding of and appreciation for diversity, and encourage environmental stewardship and community-based action for the benefit of the coastal bays and surrounding natural habitats and resources. In addition to conducting programs, the Education Intern will also assist with the organization of Children & Nature initiatives, Delmarva Environmental Educators Network, program preparation and cleanup, social media (Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Blog), written communications, and miscellaneous office tasks – all integral to the success of MCBP education & outreach.
Successful candidates must demonstrate passion for the environment, desire to educate and connect children & adults with nature, commitment to conservation, and ability to work with diverse audiences. Basic computer skills including PowerPoint, Word and Excel are vital. Reliable transportation a must. Excellent oral and written communication skills are needed. Familiarity with social media is also desired. We are looking for upper level undergraduate students, but highly motivated beginning undergraduates who are majoring in education, communication, philosophy, environmental science, biology, environmental studies or related fields will be considered.
2. Science Internship
Responsibilities focus on our science-based activities. We are looking for highly motivated undergraduates who are majoring in environmental science, biology, environmental studies geography or related fields. Duties will include water sampling, fish collections, marsh surveys, sea grass surveys, data entry, data base management and general support for report preparation and office activities. Basic computer skills including PowerPoint, Word and Excel are vital, ArcGIS familiarity a plus. Reliable transportation and punctuality are a must.

Earth Day Network Wants Your Students to
Celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Earth Day
on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.
On Sunday, April 25, Earth Day Network is expecting 500,000 people to come together on the National Mall to celebrate Earth Day and focus attention on Climate Change. The Climate Rally will include notable speakers Reverend Jesse Jackson, film director, James Cameron, AFL-CIO President, Richard Trumka, Olympic gold medalist, Billy Demong, producer, Trudie Styler, author, Margaret Atwood, NFL player and television personality, Dhani Jones, environmental photographer Sebastian Copeland and many more. The Climate Rally will also feature live music from Sting, John Legend, The Roots, Jimmy Cliff, Passion Pit, Bob Weir, Willie Colón, Joss Stone, Robert Randolph, Patrick Stump, Mavis Staples, Booker T, Honor Society and Tao Rodriguez-Seeger.

Delaware Seashore State Park is seeking a creative and motivated person to help manage interpretive programs and seasonal staff.
Schedule is as follows: Part time schedule for April – October is 37+ hours per week including weekend and evening hours. November – March is 24+ hours per week including weekend and evening hours.
Pay rate: $10.25-$10.75/hour for qualified candidates.
This part-time position has a flexible schedule that will include weekday, evenings, mandatory weekend hours and does notprovide benefits such as vacation, sick leave, medical/dental insurance, or overtime pay.
- Research, develop, schedule, and present interpretive programs
- Primary topics include coastal ecology, marsh ecology, seining, astronomy, water quality, guided hikes, birding, kayaking, fishing, crabbing, etc.
- Assist in other program areas such as historical interpretation, special events, museum tours, craft programs, etc.
- Promote park programs by writing press releases, designing flyers, updating website material, updating bulletin boards, and distributing park brochures around the community
- Assist with training & scheduling of other educators & volunteers
- Organize, schedule, and present scout programs
- Research, order, & maintain all program equipment
- Assist with gift shop and park office permit sales
- Recent graduate of, or working towards, a degree in Biological Sciences, Environmental Science, Environmental Education, or related field
- Minimum 1 year experience presenting interpretive programs designed for people of all ages
- Must be willing to work weekends and 1 night per week
- Excellent customer service skills in a fast-paced environment
- Comfortable on/near the water & ability to swim
- Must have valid driver’s license & be in good physical health
- Knowledge of coastal ecology and the mid-Atlantic region
- Experience in marketing, advertising, or journalism
- Experience with kayaking, fishing, and other water-based activities
- NAI Certified Interpretive Guide or teaching experience
- Current First Aid/CPR certification

JOB DUTIES: The MD Department of Natural Resources, Fisheries Service, Coastal Fisheries Program is currently accepting applications for Natural Resources Biologist I. This position provides field and technical support to Maryland’s Coastal Bays Finfish Investigation program. The candidate selected will assist the current biologists in monthly trawl surveys throughout Maryland’s Coastal Bays, twice-per-year seine surveys throughout Maryland’s Coastal Bays, and data entry. The position will spend up to three weeks a month conducting field surveys on a 25-foot vessel out of the Fisheries Service office in Ocean City, Maryland.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Education: Possession of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in biology, biochemistry, environmental science, aquaculture, natural science, natural resources management, botany, marine biology, marine ecology, physical oceanography, ichthyology, fisheries management, wildlife management, zoology, or a natural resources management related field of study.
Experience: Preference will be given to candidates who have up to two years experience trailering and operating small vessels. Experience with Microsoft Access is also preferred.
Note: Additional professional experience conducting research and analysis in the fields of biology, biochemistry, environmental science, natural science, natural resources management, botany, marine biology, marine ecology, physical oceanography, ichthyology, fisheries management, wildlife management or zoology may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required degree.

Executive Director Job Announcement
The Baltimore Water Alliance (working name) is a new organization forming from the merger of five existing watershed organizations in the Baltimore area. The mission of the new organization is to promote clean water in the Baltimore region, which it intends to do by conducting expanded and innovative education, restoration and advocacy programs related to
Baltimore’s streams, rivers and the harbor. The new organization will combine and build on the strengths of the individual watershed organizations and the Baltimore Harbor Waterkeeper to become the leading voice for clean water in the Baltimore region.
The Alliance seeks an experienced, respected and creative executive to help launch and lead the new organization. The ideal candidate must have a demonstrated record in nonprofit management; broad knowledge of environmental issues; ability to develop and implement strategic plans and policies; a track record in fundraising; ability to represent the organization in
political and public arenas; and good staff management skills. The executive director will have the following responsibilities:
Work with the board of directors to set policies for the organization;
Establish strategic plans and priorities in concert with the board and oversee their implementation;
Serve as the spokesperson for the organization;
Provide oversight of the finances of the organization;
Guide the fundraising and development activities of the organization;
Manage and grow the professional staff, including evaluation and hiring;
Oversee volunteer involvement in the organization;
In collaboration with the Finance Director and the Treasurer, prepare and present the annual budget to the Board of Directors for approval;
Represent the organization’s interests in building coalitions, forming partnerships, and other outreach activities;
Serve as the principal liaison to the board of directors.
Candidates for the position must demonstrate the following qualifications:

Bridging the Watershed Educator
POSITION SUMMARY: The BTW educator facilitates day-long, curriculum-based field studies to middle and high schools students in an outdoor setting at national parks in the Washington, D.C. metro region. The position also includes contacting teachers, pre- and post-field study classroom visits, data recording and reporting.
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Bridging the Watershed (BTW) is an outreach program of the Alice Ferguson Foundation in partnership with the National Capital Region of the National Park Service and area schools. The purpose of BTW is to promote student academic achievement, personal connections with the natural world, lifelong civic engagement, and environmental stewardship through hands-on curriculum-based outdoor studies in national parks and public lands. 1. Assists in planning and presenting field studies in national parks
2. Provides pre-and/or post-field experiences in school classrooms
3. Attends meetings at schools, parks, etc.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES

2. Experience working in the out-of-doors
3. At least 1 year experience presenting education programs, preferably to high school students
4. Exhibits understanding of inquiry-based science

8. Good computer skills and ability to work with new technologies (e.g., PC/Windows XP, Microsoft Word, Excel, digital pens and cameras)
9. GIS and other technological proficiency a plus.

This festival is being presented by Garrett’s Light, a non-profit organization founded in honor of the short life of a small boy who loved playing and exploring outside and whose memory is lighting the way for future generations to love, enjoy and preserve our environment. Supported by a partnership between Garrett’s Light, Anne Arundel County Parks and Recreation, Friends of Quiet Waters Park and 103.1 FM WRNR, the event will feature many state and local organizations and activities including: live music on two stages; kite flying; hot air balloon rides; the Sierra Club 5K race; interactive nature activities; scales and tales, horseshoe crab and native critter displays; presentations of environmental projects by public and private schools, and more! MAEOE hosts the nation’s largest statewide environmental education conference.
